About nocturn dance

............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

“My need to dance and make dance is for me one of those ineffable, primeval instincts; a fullness of being in your body and an ability to be truthful in expression.

As a late bloomer in dance, only starting when I was 30, I really believe as George Eliot said ‘it is never too late to be what you might have been’.”

John Darvell, Artistic Director

nocturn dance are the ‘dance macabre’ of the digital world. We seek out unconventional opportunities for contemporary dance, experimenting with interactive work, blending performance art with social media.

John Darvell, Artistic Director is a choreographer, dance artist and experienced community dance practitioner. His pathway into dance was unusual and began at age 30, having worked in new media for 15 years for one of the top 10 UK design agencies. His experience of technology and working across multiple platforms informs his choreographic process.

He trained at Laban and his movement focuses on exploring a range of different contemporary dance styles with his own energetic and engaging twist. His work is heavily influenced by the dark highlights of the world and tends to be issue based, with a focus on movement and form. John’s movement material can be described as frenetic, linear, gritty, with a core soul of an intention. He sees the creation of work in a visual way and although his work is not strictly narrative, there is still a sense of ‘timeline' throughout. He strives to give the audience a visceral, primal reaction across the senses; so will combine sound, visuals and other mediums to enhance their engagement with the work.
